How much longer will winter last? A famous groundhog named Phil may soon give us a clue. On February 2, people across the country will wait for the forecast from the town of Punxsutawney (punk-suh-TAW-nee), Pennsylvania.

According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow when he leaves his burrow, we’re in for six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t, an early spring is on the way. Since the first Groundhog Day, in 1887, the town’s groundhogs have been right less than 40 percent of the time. But that hasn’t stopped people from wanting to know Phil’s forecast!
