Knock, knock! Since April, more than 3 million workers have been going door-to-door in India. It’s part of the national census, an official count of everyone living in the country. The census workers are facing a big challenge. India is home to about 1.4 billion people, making it the world’s most populous nation.

Census counters are traveling to every corner of the South Asian country. That includes some of the most crowded cities on Earth. For example, more than 20 million people are packed into each of India’s biggest cities, Mumbai and Delhi. But there are also more than 640,000 villages with much smaller populations spread across India. Some are located on the slopes of snow-covered mountains, while others are in the middle of thick rainforests.

The Big Event

This census is India’s first since 2011. The goal isn’t only to count people. As part of the census, Indians will answer more than 70 questions. They’ll provide information about their age, job, education, and more.

Why is all that information important? India is mostly divided into states, similar to the U.S. The census results will help India’s government decide how and where to spend its money. The funds will be used to build and repair schools and roads, support programs that create jobs, and much more.

The census also determines how each state is represented in Parliament, which makes the nation’s laws. In India, states with larger populations have more representatives.

What will the big count show? Indians won’t find out for a while. The census won’t end until March 2027, and the results will be released later in the year.
