Don't Look Down!

Anyone who’s afraid of heights might want to avoid driving across a new bridge in China. The Huajiang (hwa-jing) Grand Canyon Bridge soars about 2,050 feet above the Beipan River, making it the highest bridge in the world. The Washington Monument stacked on top of the Empire State Building would easily fit underneath it.

The bridge opened to traffic in September, after more than three years of construction. The record-setting structure cuts travel time across the river in a mountainous region in southern China from two hours to just two minutes.

Chinese officials hope the bridge becomes a major tourist attraction. Visitors can take a glass elevator to a café at the top of one of the bridge’s towers. They can even bungee jump off the bridge!
