Artificial intelligence (AI) can make virtual assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri seem almost human. But does that mean you should say “please” and “thank you” to them? Two out of three Americans say they’re polite while interacting with smart speakers and AI chatbots. That’s according to a 2024 survey by Future, a publishing company.
Many people think it’s unnecessary to be nice to AI assistants, because they’re just machines or computer programs. These people point out that we don’t type “please” when using Google or other search engines to find information.
But others argue that it’s always rude to bark orders, even when you’re talking to a device. Jodi R.R. Smith is an author and expert on etiquette, or good manners. She says even though AI assistants don’t have feelings, using “please” and “thank you” when interacting with them is great practice for being respectful to people.
“It’s all about building good behaviors and good habits,” Smith explains. She adds that there’s no harm in being polite to AI, so why not do it?
