1. What does the article mean when it says that the Paris Olympics marked a “triumphant comeback” for Simone Biles? When the article says that Biles made a “triumphant comeback,” it means that she was competing again after a break. The article notes, “At the previous Games in Japan, she pulled out of several events to protect her mental and physical health.” R.1 Inference
2. Find an example of a cause and a related effect in the 2024 Year in Review. Describe them and note the section in which you found them. Multilingual Learners Support multilingual learners by explaining that in the section “Stuck in Space,” NASA is an acronym. An acronym is made up of the first letter of each word in a phrase but is pronounced as a single word. NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
Paired Text If students want to know more about people who help communities stay safe from hurricanes, pair this article with “Hunting Hurricanes” (Aug. 29, 2022).
Discussion After reading, have students break into small groups to discuss: Which of these 2024 news events do you think was the most important? Why? Have groups share their thinking with the class.
Enrichment Activity Have students work in small groups to list five other news events from 2024 that they think were important. Groups can look back at issues of Scholastic News or consult other reliable news sites for inspiration.
