Should Schools Require Uniforms?

How much time do you spend planning your outfit for school each morning? If you wear a uniform, probably not much. About 16 percent of U.S. public schools require uniforms, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Uniforms are also the only option for kids at many private schools.

Supporters of school uniforms say they keep students focused on schoolwork instead of fashion. Some people point out that uniforms can boost school spirit and reduce bullying. They argue that kids are less likely to be teased when everyone is wearing the same thing.

But many people say uniforms prevent kids from expressing themselves. Plus, they can be expensive. Buying the required shirts, pants, or skirts can cost up to $500, according to a company called Uniform Market. The cost is one of the main reasons public schools in Akron, Ohio, are moving to end their school uniform policy. In a survey last year, 70 percent of parents in the district voted in favor of the decision.

Here’s what two of our readers think.

I wear a uniform to school, and I think it’s great! Getting ready in the morning is easier because you know exactly what you’ll be wearing each day. At school, you won’t be jealous of anyone else who might be wearing nicer clothes than you are.

At schools that don’t require uniforms, it can be hard for kids to follow all the dress code rules. That’s less of a problem at my school. And we can still show off our personal style. I like to wear my school uniform with fun leggings and sweaters.

Wearing uniforms takes away kids’ freedom. Picking your own clothes helps you feel like you have control over your life. And wearing the same thing every day would be boring! I like wearing sweatpants and a T-shirt to school. If I’m not comfortable, it’s hard for me to focus.

Besides, kids who wear uniforms still need regular clothes for outside of school. Parents will have to keep replacing two sets of clothes as their kids grow, which can be expensive.
