Should Schools Ban Cupcakes?

Something is missing from classroom birthday celebrations in Arlington, Virginia: cupcakes, cookies, and other treats. As of this school year, students in public schools in the district aren’t allowed to bring in snacks for parties.

Many schools across the country have similar policies. School officials point out that sweet treats often have ingredients that could be dangerous for students with food allergies. Some schools allow only healthy snacks, like fruits and vegetables, for class celebrations. Others encourage kids to bring in small party favors, such as pencils or stickers, to share with the class instead of sweets.

But not everyone wants to keep sugary treats out of classroom celebrations. They say it’s much more festive to have cupcakes and cookies than apples or pencils at a party.

Some schools allow sweets as long as they’re safe for kids with allergies. For example, they might allow only treats that are bought from a store, are individually wrapped, and list all ingredients on the package.

Here’s what two of our readers think.

Parties with sweet treats can exclude kids with food allergies. Once, my class had cupcakes made in a factory that processed peanuts, so my friend who’s allergic to peanuts couldn’t have them. No one should feel like the odd one out.

Also, having too much sugar can cause tooth decay and other health problems. You can celebrate without sweets. One year on my birthday, I picked an activity for my class. We played an exercise game from GoNoodle together. It was fun!

Even though cupcakes and cookies aren’t the healthiest foods, it’s OK to enjoy them in small amounts for special occasions. Celebrating a birthday with sweets gives us a chance to take a break from schoolwork.

Students may be able to invite only a few kids to parties outside school. But class parties include everyone, so they should be as fun as possible. For my birthday one year, I brought in cookies for the class. It felt special to provide treats for everyone.
