Whose Holiday Is It?

On Monday, February 17, many schools and businesses across the U.S. will be closed for a national holiday. But what is the holiday called? If you said “Presidents’ Day,” you’re not exactly right. Many people don’t realize that the official name given by Congress is Washington’s Birthday. The holiday is meant to honor our nation’s first president, who was born on February 22, 1732.

Some states also choose to honor Abraham Lincoln (born on February 12, 1809) on that day. Many other states make “Presidents’ Day” a celebration of all past presidents. And nine states don’t officially recognize the holiday at all!
