One Cool City

Brrrr! On January 5, the high temperature in Harbin, China, was barely above zero degrees Fahrenheit. But the frigid weather didn’t stop more than 800,000 people from heading to the city’s coolest attraction. It was the opening ceremony of the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival.

The annual winter wonderland features huge works of frozen art. Sculptors from around the world create hundreds of structures from ice and snow. This year’s festival includes a towering castle and icy versions of famous landmarks, like the Great Wall of China.

In addition to taking in the snowy sights, festival-goers can zip down huge ice slides or explore a heart-shaped ice maze. At night, the city comes to life in a rainbow of colors as neon lights shine through the frozen displays.

Setting up the frosty festival takes months. Workers cut tens of thousands of ice blocks from the frozen Songhua River, which winds through Harbin. Artists then use saws, chisels, and other tools to carve the blocks and stack them, creating buildings and other sculptures.

The festival is expected to last until late February, when the weather usually warms up. But this wonderland will be back again next winter.
