You’ve probably never seen the Statue of Liberty like this before. This photo was taken in 1886, not long after America’s most famous lady arrived on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The statue was a gift of friendship from France. It was shipped to the United States in about 350 pieces.
Now visitors to the island can come face-to-face with Lady Liberty. A new museum at the base of the statue lets visitors see—and touch—a full-sized replica, or copy, of her historic features.
