On your mark, get set, go! Last fall, more than 40 cars took off on a five-day race across Australia. But the drivers didn’t have to worry about filling up a gas tank. All the cars ran on energy from the sun!

They were competing in the World Solar Challenge. Each team designed a car with solar panels on top. The panels absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity to power the vehicles.

The World Solar Challenge isn’t just about winning. The main goal of the race is to highlight the benefits of solar energy. Unlike cars that use gasoline, solar cars don’t pollute the air. Also, sunlight is a renewable resource, so we won’t ever run out of it.
