Scholastic News: You have a unique way of combining words and pictures to tell a story. What is your process for creating a book?
Brian Selznick: My longer books take three years to make. It’s about a year of mapping out the general idea of the book and doing sketches, and a year just to do the finished art. And then another year of doing rewrites and then the graphic design, typography [the styling of words], and doing the cover. So Hugo, Wonderstruck, and The Marvels represent a decade’s worth of work.
